Reasons Your Facebook Account Will Be Disabled ....

1.You didn't use your real name. Facebook will find you and spit you out.
2.You joined too many groups. (The maximum limit is 200 groups per user.)
3.You posted too many messages on a wall or in a group. E.g. Guy Kawasaki had his account disabled–in his case for “excessive evangelism.”
4.You posted in too many groups, too many user’s walls. (That’s what spammers do, silly.)
5.You friend too many people. (Not so long ago this was a prime cause of disabled accounts, but Facebook has instituted a maximum of 5000 friends that should protect you from yourself.)
6.Your school/organization affiliation is doubtful.
7.You’re poking too many people. (Beware the odd FB app that pokes on your behalf.)
8.You advertised your app on wall posts.
9.You used duplicate text in multiple messages.
10.You are a cow, dog, or library.
11.You are under 18 years old and not part of a High School group.
12.You wrote offensive content.
13 You scraped information off Facebook. E.g. Facebook bots disabled Robert Scoble’s account.
Here are more possible reasons your account may be deactivated:
You send “too many” friend requests in one day/session.
You make “too many” wall posts in one day/session – especially with verbatim content and with links.
You copy and paste the same friend request message “too many” times.
You send too many identical emails to individual friends and/or friend lists*.
You message your Group members “too many” times.
You message your Event invitees “too many” times.
Recommended Action Steps:
Take your time to build up a strategic network of friends on Facebook.
Focus on quality, not quantity.
Send no more than approximately 20 new friend requests at any one time. Also, be sure to mix up the friend request messages.
Use your own opt-in email system.
Build out your Facebook Page.
Include Facebook in your overall marketing strategy. Don’t put all your social networking “eggs” in one basket. Build up a following on Twitter, FriendFeed, Plaxo, LinkedIn, etc.

Remember there was life before Facebook.

MobileContent launches live video/audio streaming app

Interface of the StreamGH App
One of Ghana’s leading mobile app developers, MobileContent has introduced a new mobile app called StreamGH in the Android Google Play store, which allows users to upload videos, audio clips and informational for others to stream live and pay for it.
Currently, most videos and audio clips are either on Youtube, Godtube and other platforms where people stream for free, and the content owner does not earn any money.
General Manager for Innov8 at MobileContent, Jonny Abdulai told Adombusiness StreamGH allows musicians, movie producers and other content owners to stream music videos, movie clips, informational, and audio clips and earn a minimum of 20Gp per view.
“This means if you upload a video on our platform and people view it they pay 20Gp per view and we at MobileContent share the money with you the content provider,” he said. “This is better than putting your videos on platforms where you do not earn any money.”
Jonny Abdulai said currently videos from Ghanaian female African pop musician Becca are on the app. The videos are mainly Becca’s activities before and at the ongoing World Cup tournament in Brazil, including her live performance in Brazil.
He said very often Ghanaian musicians give out their songs to be used as caller ring-back-tone but that has proven not very profitable to them. Abdulai was however confident that StreamGH would help to not only popularize songs, artistes and movies from Ghana, but also earn the content providers some money.
“Unlike the other platforms where people could stream and sometimes download songs and clips for free, StreamGH does not allow the user to download the song, or clip – it only allows live streaming and the user also pays for every stream,” he explained.
Jonny Abdulai said currently there is a revenue share arrangement between the content provider and MobileContent, but “we have are integrating a new billing platform behind StreamGH, if that is completed, it will mean 100% of the revenue (20Gp per stream) will go to the content provider.”
He said content providers who put their songs, videos and clips on StreamGH would have to direct people to the app so that people would look for their content on that app and pay instead of on other platforms where they will stream or download for free.
“We believe out musicians in particular would have to be paid for their work and we are confident that this app will over time achieve that,” he said.

Cardcafe
Meanwhile, the company’s electronic greeting cards app, Cardscafe, which was launched about seven years ago has also recorded some 38,000 plus downloads worldwide.
Abadulai said over 5,000 of those downloads are in Ghana, 3,000 plus in Cote d’Ivoire, some 4,000 in China, and the rest are spread across Nigeria, Lebanon, Israel and several other countries.
“We believe Cafecafe is gaining popularity because when people send cards to their relatives and friends, there is always an opportunity for the recipient to install the app and that is working well,” he said.
Abdulai said Cardcafe still uses SMS as the platform to send cards but they are still working on making it an app to app communication when the number of download reaches anything between 50,000 and 100,000.
But currently the company has changed the user interface (UI) of the app and made it more likeable. The UI now looks brownish and more like a table shelf where cards are stored.

DailyGuide
Mobile Content has also launched a new app for the Daily Guide newspaper, where users could read every news content in the Daily Guide newspaper on that app.
Jonny Abdulai said the app allows users to see even the famous Akosua cartoon plus pictures and videos that come with every story, adding that the app also allows users to refer to content in previous days’ newspapers.
Meanwhile the company’s chat app, HollaChat is also in the Google Play store and they are currently working on a dating app called Kupid and another app for tourists to Accra called AccessAccra.
“Kupid is 90% done and we will be uploading it soon - AccessAccra is also 90% complete and it is now being populated with details of hotels, and places of interests, plus google maps of places for easy location,” Abdulai said.

5 online privacy tips from an ex-FBI agent

mary galligan privacy
Mary Galligan used to work for the FBI. She shares her tips on how to protect your privacy and online identity

If anyone knows about cyber surveillance, it's Mary Galligan.

Until recently, she led the cyber and special operations team at the FBI's New York office -- the agency's largest surveillance operation. That included catching hackers like the infamous "Sabu" and using him to hunt down other hackers.
Galligan is now a security and privacy consultant at Deloitte. Here's how she protects her privacy.
1. Change passwords once a month. Passwords are the keys into your life. If a criminal gets access to your email or any of your online accounts, it's surprisingly easy for them to worm their way into other aspects of your life.
Assume your passwords will periodically get compromised. Adobe, AOL, eBay, Kickstarter and Yahoo have all had major security glitches in the past few months.
2. Give the wrong contact information at checkout. Every time a store clerk asks for your zip code or phone number, that data gets aggregated. So retailers not only have databases that show where you live. They can find out much more about you, like your salary, credit history and birthday.
Check out CNNMoney's Flipboard on cybersecurity
Recent data breaches -- like last year's Target hack -- show that companies aren't responsible enough to safeguard that information. That's why Galligan said she always gives clerks a phone number and zip code that aren't hers.
But she laughed while recalling one time this backfired on her. She was shopping with her 7-year-old niece -- who called her out for lying.
3. Need photo ID? Don't show your driver's license. This is a general rule for privacy. Don't reveal more than you have to. A driver's license shows your birthday and address.
Next time your doctor's office asks for identification with a photo, show them something else, like your office building badge.

4. No banking apps. Galligan is particularly careful about access to her bank account. Although most credit cards have fraud protection, your checking and savings accounts don't.
Because of how easy it is for a computer to get infected with a malware that spies on you, Galligan doesn't shop and bank on the same computer. That includes her phone.
5. Keep one email account for junk mail only. When companies demand an email address, Galligan gives them a dummy account reserved for marketing.
It gets bombarded with spam and annoying advertisements -- and shields her real email from the junk. And if those companies get hacked, her real account remains safe.

Bill Gates (Up Close)

Bill Gates, a young computer addict, was driven to the point that he would fall asleep over his computer. He was unkempt looking, but it didn't matter to him. The only thing that mattered was computer programming. Perhaps in the back of his head he could hear his grandmother Adelle (Gam) saying, "think smart, think smart!" He was indeed, an extremely competitive young man. He could also be "an extremely annoying person." He later was known to be so obnoxious he would scream and berate his employees. Was this behavior somehow linked to his phenomenal success? What made him turn his life around and become a philanthropist?

When Bill was a teenager, the scenery was a bit different. The elite in the computer field actually welcomed young people into their fold. Dick Gruen indicated that "a young enthusiast was welcomed, not treated as a gofer." Bill, a troubled `tween and teen, later met up with his partner Paul Allen at Lakeside, a private school, where they were progressive enough to have a terminal linked to a computer. Perhaps many of you know part of Bill's story or may think you know a lot about him, but Marc Aronson's main objective in this book is to tell you how he did it. You are in for a rare treat in this fabulous book! You'll even see a couple of pictures of him as a teenage computer guru.

This book is actually a study in how young people can succeed, but the only problem is (perhaps it is possible) that this special individual must have not just a few of the opportunities and qualities Bill Gates had, but must possess ALL of them in order to empower him/herself to the height and success he achieved. I was not particularly familiar with Bill Gates's business life, nor did I have a feel for his individuality, but after this reading this book I feel I know a lot about him and have a good sense as to whom he is. Did you know there was one man who "was not granted a share in the company he had help to create?" You'll have to read the book to find out about him. Whoa!

Wordpress website targeted by hackers

Wordpress has been attacked by a botnet of "tens of thousands" of individual computers since last week, according to server hosters Cloudflare and Hostgator.
The botnet targets Wordpress users with the username "admin", trying thousands of possible passwords.
The attack began a week after Wordpress beefed up its security with an optional two-step authentication log-in option.
The site currently powers 64m websites read by 371m people each month.
According to survey website W3Techs, around 17% of the world's websites are powered by Wordpress.
"Here's what I would recommend: If you still use 'admin' as a username on your blog, change it, use a strong password," wrote Wordpress founder Matt Mullenweg on his blog.
He also advised adopting two-step authentication, which involves a personalised "secret number" allocated to users in addition to a username and password, and ensuring that the latest version of Wordpress is installed.
"Most other advice isn't great - supposedly this botnet has more than 90,000 IP addresses, so an IP-limiting or login-throttling plugin isn't going to be great (they could try from a different IP [address] a second for 24 hours)," Mr Mullenweg added.
Matthew Prince, Chief Executive and co-founder of Cloudflare, said that the aim of the attack may have been to build a stronger botnet.
"One of the concerns of an attack like this is that the attacker is using a relatively weak botnet of home PCs in order to build a much larger botnet of beefy servers in preparation for a future attack," he wrote in a blog post.
"These larger machines can cause much more damage in DDoS [Distributed Denial of Service] attacks because the servers have large network connections and are capable of generating significant amounts of traffic," he added.

Six Android apps you'll Love !

Feedly (free)
With Google Reader set to go away very soon, Feedly might be your best bet as an app that lets you access your RSS feeds while on the go. It looks great, works well, and even features two-way syncing with Google Reader. Also, according to its developers, Feedly will offer a seamless transition once Google's service officially bites the dust.

Compared with other RSS readers out there, Feedly is exceptionally visual. It makes use of large images and incorporates magazine-style layouts. To many, this is a good thing. But for those out there who are looking for a simpler text-based list, similar to Google Reader, this might not be the app for you.
If you do decide to try Feedly, you can expect a wealth of features that enhance your reading experience. The app comes with themes and other customization options, integration with bookmarking tool Pocket, and more. The app even offers suggestions for interesting sites that you can subscribe to with a single tap.
You can also get Feedly for iOS.
If Boggle and Bejeweled had a love child, SpellTower would be it.
In SpellTower, your goal is to find as many high-value words as you can among the board of lettered tiles (just like in Boggle). Thing is, as you find these words, the used tiles disappear, causing the remaining tiles to drop down and occupy the empty space (just as in Bejeweled). The result is a board that continues to change throughout your game. So, as you can imagine, when playing SpellTower, it is in your best interests to think ahead, and try to set yourself up for big moves as you go. And did I mention there's a multiplayer mode that is very much like those old-school Tetris head-to-head battles?
You can also get SpellTower for iOS.
PushBullet may not be the most popular app on this list, but it is a good one. Consider it a sleeper hit. PushBullet is the easiest way to get files, links, notes, lists, and addresses from your desktop computer to your mobile device. Once you install it, all you have to do is log in to the PushBullet Web site on your computer, then use one of the modules to push an item to your device. Once you do so, the item will appear in your Android notification bar, so you can access it with a single tap.

It's fast, reliable, and easy to use. Plus, PushBullet lets you add multiple mobile devices to your account, which widens your pushing possibilities considerably.
Songza is not your typical streaming-music app. It offers a different take on radio, as it tries to match the perfect playlist with your mood or whatever activity you happen to currently be engaged.

While other music apps start you off with a search bar, Songza gives you a Concierge screen, where it presents you with choices of different activities (e.g. working out, doing housework, or taking the day off). Here, you can either pick the one you're currently engaged in, or bypass the choices to look for more. In the end, Songza will serve you up a playlist that the company's curators deem appropriate for the given activity.
Voted "Best Social Game" at the International Mobile Gaming Awards, Candy Crush Saga takes the popular match-three style of game to another level by adding a variety of special game pieces (candies), "boosters," and objectives that go beyond simply scoring a lot of points. With its addictive gameplay, simple controls, and whimsical, circus-themed animation, it is very difficult not to develop a sweet tooth for this game. Some might call it a Bejeweled clone, but with its variety of levels, Candy Crush Saga is so much more.

You can also get Candy Crush Saga for iOS.
While some might be quick to call Cinemagram nothing more than a Vine clone, the reality is that this app has quite a few features that set it apart from its Twitter-owned rival. Chief among these is its ability to create cinemagraphs, which are essentially hybrid photo-videos.

To create a cinemagraph, you must first record video footage. From there, all you have to do is draw a mask around the portion of the screen that you want to remain in motion, and the rest will remain a static photo. If you've never seen a cinemagraph, they can be beautifully artistic or sometimes downright creepy.
You can also get Cinemagram for iOS.

TECNO to open door for Ghanaian app developers

Tecno Ghana says it would soon start a project to provide the opportunity for young Ghanaian app developers to design applications specially for Tecno branded smartphones.

The company said it is going viral with affordable but high quality smartphones to enable all Ghanaians own smartphones that march the quality of the top brands on the market. And the plus would be apps that are developed by young Ghanaians.

Head of Marketing and Communications at Tecno Ghana, Jocelene Buckman told Adom Business “we are looking at young Ghanaian app developers coming up with apps that are relevant locally and globally."

She said the project would be in the form of a challenge, where the best apps would emerge as winning apps, and the young developers behind them would then be given the opportunity to fine tune them for Tecno for a fee.

“This is part of our dream to have some local content in Tecno handsets and also give young Ghanaian ICT talents the opportunity to live and grow their dreams and also earn a decent living while doing so,” she said.

The company is also on course to start its assembling plant within the Tema Free Zones enclave soon.

Buckman hinted that company officials have had meetings with the relevant authorities and sooner than later they would start the construction of a plant that would, at full capacity, assemble up to one million handsets for the West African market.

Meanwhile, the company has only recently launched its new and second smartphone, the 3.75G Android dual-sim Tecno N7, which came after the groundbreaking Tecno N3.

Jocelene Buckman said Tecno N3 is currently selling between 7,000 and 8,000 handsets every month, and the new Tecno N7 sold over 200 in just the first week of its release three months ago, prior to the recent official launch.

She is confident the new handset, which is its flagship product, would do well on the Ghanaian market because it comes with the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, and a 1GHz dual core processor, running on a 5-inch touch screen, comparable with the Samsung Galaxy Note II.

The inbuilt memory is 4GB and the operating memory is 512MB, but the company gives an 8GB memory card for free with every purchase, and the memory is expandable to 32GB.

It also comes with a free Tecno branded pouch, and MTN SIM card plus 500MB data for free. The Tecno N7 has a 5 megapixel rear camera and 0.3 megapixel front camera.

Jocelene Buckman said users can download up to 800,000 applications on the phone, and the 3.75G feature gives users great experience in terms of data speeds.

“One of the applications worthy of mention is the Flash Share, a unique transfer software that allows one to share files of any format and size at an amazingly fast speed and does not require internet connectivity, WIFI or SIM card,” she said.

She said Tecno’s aim is to empower the young Africans with a more superior smartphone with high-end performance and a better user experience, but affordable too.

In that direction, the company hinted it would, by June this year, release a new Tecno F7 phablet that would march the quality of any smartphone on the market and it would come with a 6.1 touch screen, plus 13 mega pixels rear camera.

“We have already shown samples of the new phone to our partners and they are over excited about it just as we are. The unique thing about our phone is that it has the same quality as the big brands but it is dual SIM and it is also affordable,” Jocelene Buckman said.

She also hinted that the company would follow up soon with its branded tablet and several other smartphones would follow in the course of the year.

General Manager, Operations at Tecno Ghana, Derek Nkrumah said the new Tecno handsets, come with 13 months warranty, adding that it case of a fault, the company would fix the handset and return to the owner within just 24 hours.

Tecno Mobile was the first company in the world to start producing dual SIM phones. They have since driven everybody, including the big boys like Nokia and Samsung to start producing dual SIM phones, while Tecno itself has moved on to tri-SIM and quadruple-SIM feature phones.

Tecno phones is number three on the handsets market and revenue share charts in Ghana, with a little over 8.5% market share and about 4% revenue share. It is behind Samsung and Nokia, which are first and second respectively.

Thousands Of Apache Servers Attacked!

malware, Apache server, Blachole, exploit, cyber attack, Linux

Another cyber attack has been uncovered! Eset, security firm has found out about a malicious cyber campaign, which reportedly uses a backdoor exploit in Apache Web servers. It then directs users to websites that carry Blackhole exploit packs. The firm has shared that the attack has already victimised thousands of websites.

In a V3 exclusive, Righard Zwienenberg, Eset senior researcher said, “The backdoor, codenamed Linux/Cdorked.A, is one of the most advanced attacks to target the Apache platform, boasting advanced detection dodging powers. The configuration of Linux/Cdorked.A is pushed to the system using obfuscated HTTP requests not apparent in Apache's log. This hides the fact that the web server is compromised. Linux/Cdorked.A can also receive commands with HTTP-POST.”

Zwienenberg further added that the real problem here is that Linux/Cdorked.A is known to leave no evidence of the hosts that have been compromised on the hard drive. It just leaves a modified httpd binary, which complicates the entire process of forensics analysis, making it difficult to assess the danger levels.

"With so many Web servers running Apache, potentially hundreds of thousands of sites are vulnerable to this hard-to-detect threat. Other than modifying the existing httpd daemon service, all other traces are only in memory. Traffic to the website may be directed to other sites, where some of the redirects are to sites that carry the notorious Blackhole Exploit Kit," added Zwienenberg.

"Businesses must make sure they are always are up to date in applying all security patches. The days when patch management was a luxury are long gone. These must be completed so every employee is safe, and complemented with appropriate prevention measurements, such as anti-malware security suites,” he suggested.

YouTube Launches Subscription Fees

YouTube has launched a trial scheme for paid channels on its website.

Under the pilot programme, a small number of content makers will offer the channels for subscriptions starting at $0.99 (£0.64) a month.
Each channel will offer a free 14-day trial and many will have discounted annual rates.
Although the initial 53-channel line-up is fairly niche, one expert suggested the move might ultimately squeeze some smaller rivals out of the market.
YouTube, which is owned by Google, said the launch was part of an effort to enable "content creators to earn revenue for their creativity".
For example, the children's television favourite, Sesame Street will offer full episodes on its pay channel when it launches.
Subscribers can pay using either their credit cards or through Google's own Wallet service.
The paid channels involved in the pilot are diverse.
They include National Geographic Kids, Acorn - which provides episodes from several British TV series -and Fix My Hog Premium, which is aimed at Harley Davidson motorcycle enthusiasts.
"This is just the beginning", YouTube said on its blog.
"We'll be rolling paid channels out more broadly in the coming weeks as a self-service feature for qualifying partners.
"And as new channels appear, we'll be making sure you can discover them."
Traditional TV turn-off?
The advent of paid channels on YouTube means Google joins Netflix, Hulu and Amazon in offering subscription-based alternatives to traditional pay-TV.
"The wider picture here is that the internet and TV worlds are colliding," Ian Maude, an online media expert at consultants Enders Analysis told the BBC.
"The YouTube move will make it much harder for smaller standalone online subscription-based platforms because Google has the infrastructure to make it easy for content to be hosted, delivered and billed for.
"But it was always inevitable that Google was going to do this."
One billion viewers
Google bought YouTube in 2006 for $1.65bn. The service is believed to generate a small amount of revenue from advertising, but the vast majority of its content has been free-to-watch.
To make itself more attractive to potential advertisers, YouTube has gradually added professional content, such as full-length films and TV shows, to its vast library of amateur videos.
YouTube says a billion people around the world use the service every month.
"If YouTube were a country, we'd be the third largest in the world after China and India," the company said in March.

Android device owners can now navigate Ghana with Google Maps

Users of android devices in Ghana can now move or drive about freely and easily to locations following Google’s introduction and upgrade of maps application in the country, which now has voice prompt upgrade.

Google Ghana introduced Google Maps Navigation recently to enable owners of android devices such as smart phones and iphones have comprehensive, accurate and easy-to-go maps with built in local search, voice guided turn-by-turn navigation to all kinds of places.

Mrs Estelle Akofio-Sowah, Country Manager, Google Ghana said on Wednesday that for a while now users of Google Maps in Ghana had been able to get direction whether sitting in their cars or whether walking in Ghana but receiving the information in text form while driving or walking using their phones.

But she said: “Now what we have done now is to improve the safety of that, because you will not be driving and using your phone at the same time anymore. You now have a voice that tells you in five meters take a right turn and if you miss that turning it will redirect you. It is now giving you a voice prompt turn-by-turn navigation to get to your destinations”.

She said this during an experiential session with the media, IT experts, representatives from the Fidelity Bank and the Ghana Tourism Authority; and students from the Valley View University and Ghana Telecom University, who shared their experiences on the use of Google Maps.

Mrs Akofio-Sowah said in terms of content, Google Ghana had improved tremendously in enriching the information on maps with the support of users. In Ghana, she said, the maps project started four years ago and that it was important for people to get more and more interested to make life easy for them.

“There is pretty much information on every street name in Ghana that is known now on Google Maps. The efforts we driving now is really to showcase that people can use Google Maps to tell the world where they are. It is really simple,” she added.

Jacqueline Rajuai, Programme Manager, Google Maps, underscored the need to ensure constant updating of information on the maps with the changing times in order to keep them fresh always for users.

“Maps are now simple to use and easy to understand by every single person… Maps bring data to life,” she said and noted that last year in 2012 globally about one billion Google Maps applications were downloaded. Again, Rajuai said, Over 800,000 websites last year had Google Maps embedded in them.

The Greater Accra Regional Minister Julius Debrah expressed happiness with the development and introduction of Google Maps Navigation in Ghana and noted that hitherto people carried all kinds of devices with navigation and vehicles with navigation screens yet they were not functional and did not have an idea what benefit they were.

But, he added, today with the effort of Google Ghana, we have solutions to almost all our needs just on a mobile device.

Users of Google Maps can now discover great places in Ghana to eat, drink, shop and play. They can search to find addresses, places and businesses around the country and get voice guided, turn-by-turn driving directions, and find their ways by train, bus, subway or walking directions.

Beginners tips to optimize Windows for better performance

With Windows 7 and later, Microsoft has tried to make PC experience easy and clutter-free for its users. It has many auto-optimizing features to make your PC run smoother, but you must know some basic computer optimization tips to make your computer work efficiently.
It doesn’t matter how fast or shiny computers might be when they’re new, they all seem to get slower over time. That state-of-the-art PC you bought last year might not feel like such a screamer after you install a dozen programs, load it with antispyware and antivirus tools, and download untold amounts of junk from the Internet. The slowdown might happen so gradually that you hardly notice it, until one day you’re trying to open a program or file and wonder, “What happened to my PC?” This slowdown is called Windows Rot; although Microsoft has done a lot to reduce this, since Windows Vista.

Optimize Windows for better performance

Whatever the cause, there are lots of ways to help speed up Windows and make your PC work better even without upgrading your hardware. Here are some very easy and basic tips to help you optimize Windows 7 for faster performance:
Use Performance Troubleshooter: The first thing that you can try is the Performance troubleshooter, which can automatically find and fix performance problems. The Performance troubleshooter checks issues that might slow down your computer’s performance, such as how many users are currently logged on to the computer and whether multiple programs are running at the same time. To run the Performance Troubleshooter follow these simple steps:
  • Go to Control Panel and click on Action Center.
  • In Action Center, click on Troubleshooting, click on View All option available in the left pane.
  • From the list of troubleshooters select Performance troubleshooter and follow the steps available in wizard to fix the performance related  issues.

Remove programs you never use: Many PC manufacturers pack new computers with many unwanted software which you may never use. These are often limited versions or trial versions of software or crapware which are after a certain time period have no use, utilities and programs installed by you may be have no use as many software are bundled with lots of unwanted options like toolbar, registry scanners, web browsers.  keeping unwanted and useless software installed have adverse effect on PC performance, its better to uninstall them and save disk space.
Manage your start up programs: Many programs are designed to start automatically when Windows starts. Software manufacturers often set their programs to open in the background, where you can’t see them running. That’s helpful for programs you use a lot, but for programs you rarely or never use, this wastes precious memory and slows down the time it takes Windows to finish starting up. To manage your start ups ,you can use System Configuration utility.
  • Click on Start and type MSCONFIG in search bar.
  • Open it and click on Start Up tab.
  • Unchecked the entries which you’ll found unnecessary to run at Windows Start up.
  • Click Apply and Ok to save the settings and then restart your PC.

Defragment your hard disk: Fragmentation makes your hard disk do extra work that can slow down your computer. Disk Defragmenter rearranges fragmented data so your hard disk can work more efficiently. Disk Defragmenter runs on a schedule, but you can also defragment your hard disk manually. To use Windows inbuilt Disk Defragmenter utility, navigate to Accessories folder in Start menu, then Click on  System Tools and run Disk Defragmenter.

Defraggler is my personal favorite free Disk Defragmentation software.
Use Disk Cleanup to clean Hard Drive: Unnecessary files on your hard disk take up disk space and can slow down your computer. The Disk Cleanup Utility removes temporary files, empties the Recycle Bin, and removes a variety of system files and other items that you no longer need. To use Disk Cleanup, follow these steps:
  • Open Computer, Right click on Hard Disk partition for which you want to run Disk Cleanup.
  • Then click on Disk Cleanup button. It will take some time to start as it will analyzes for Junk files.
  • Check the boxes for files which are useless and click Ok.
19 Oct 10 7 33 43 PM Beginners tips to optimize Windows for better performance
CCleaner is my personal favorite for junk cleaning.
Un-installing programs you do not need or use is also a good idea!
Run only the necessary programs at the same time: Many times we keeps on running several programs at same time and more often half of them remains open without of any use. Sometimes changing the behavior of using your PC also benefits in gaining better performance. If you find your PC slowing down, ask yourself if you really need to keep all your programs and windows open at once. Find a better way to remind yourself to reply to email messages rather than keeping all of them open. Make sure you’re only running one antivirus program. Running more than one anti virus program can also slow down your computer. Fortunately, if you’re running more than one anti-virus program, the Action Center notifies you and can help you fix the problem.
Turn off Visual Effects: If Windows is running slowly, you can speed it up by disabling some of its visual effects. It comes down to appearance versus performance. Would you rather have Windows run faster or look prettier? If your PC is fast enough, you don’t have to make this tradeoff, but if your computer is just barely powerful enough for Windows 7, it can be useful to scale back on the visual bells and whistles.
You can choose which visual effects to turn off, one by one, or you can let Windows choose for you. There are 20 visual effects you can control, such as the transparent glass look, the way menus open or close, and whether shadows are displayed.
To adjust all visual effects for best performance:
  • Right Click on Computer icon and click on properties.
  • In the left pane, click on Advance Settings.  If you’re prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
  • Click on settings in performance and then check or uncheck options to adjust for best performance and then click OK. (For a less drastic option, select Let Windows choose what’s best for my computer).

20 Oct 10 1 42 46 PM 410x600 Beginners tips to optimize Windows for better performance
Restart your PC occasionally:  This tip is simple. Restart your PC at least once a week, especially if you use it a lot. Restarting a PC is a good way to clear out its memory and ensure that any errant processes and services that started running get shut down. Restarting closes all the software running on your PC, not only the programs you see running on the taskbar but also dozens of services and drivers that might have been started by various programs and never stopped. This step refreshes your Windows OS.
Add more Memory: This isn’t a guide to buying hardware that will speed up your computer. But no discussion of how to make Windows run faster would be complete without mentioning that you should consider adding more random access memory (RAM) to your PC.
If a computer running Windows 7 or Windows 8 seems too slow, it’s usually because the PC doesn’t have enough RAM. The best way to speed it up is to add more. Windows 7 can run on a PC with 1GB of RAM, but it runs better with 2 GB. For optimal performance 3 GB or more would be preferred. Another option is to boost the amount of memory by using Windows ReadyBoost.
Check for viruses and spyware: If your PC is running slowly, it’s possible that it’s infected with a virus or spyware. This is not as common as the other problems, but it’s something to consider. Before you worry too much, check your PC using antispyware and antivirus programs. A common symptom of a virus is a much slower-than-normal computer performance. Other signs include unexpected messages that pop up on your PC, programs that start automatically, or the sound of your hard disk constantly working.
Spyware is a type of program that’s installed, usually without your knowledge, to watch your activity on the Internet. You can check for spyware with Windows Defender or other antispyware programs. The best way to deal with viruses is to prevent them in the first place. Always run antivirus software and keep it up to date. Even if you take such precautions, however, it’s possible for your PC to become infected.
